The world is dynamic and changing and there is a need for adaptation that comes from curiosity, paying attention, creativity, and agency. Luna situates learning at the center of all that we do. Our programs are designed to share the spiral of the artistic and human experiences of dance. Although described as distinct programs, in practice, these service areas interact in planned and unexpected ways.
Studio Lab
An incubation hub for creative inquiry
Our Studio Lab (SL)-Kids programs and SL-Teens offer an articulated progression of dance learning designed to nurture the choreographer in every child in a studio class structure offered during non-school hours.
Luna’s home in Berkeley also offers SL-Adult experiences and opportunities for students and adults to connect. Community education is a part of SL through presentations on dance research, the choreographic process, and topics that expand ideas about what dance is and who can dance.
Professional Learning
The pedagogy engine of Luna
Professional Learning (PL) is where we develop theoretical frameworks and test them, discover and articulate best practices, and meet our mission of bringing all children to dance by supporting those who work with children: teachers, artists, community workers, and therapists.
Field Moving
Toward justice
Luna’s Field Moving efforts help the field of dance education arc toward justice through our practice-to-policy approach, which includes sharing the findings of our inquiries and research; joining with others to create impact; and relentlessly advocating for inclusion, creativity, and self-determination.
Partnerships
Practice-to-policy is achievable with allies
Luna builds programs for partners and engages in field research in schools, early learning centers, social service agencies, districts, counties, and arts organizations.
MPACT (Moving Parents and Children Together) is offered through partnerships with local social service agencies such as Project Pride and free family dance classes open to the public at libraries and community centers. MPACT classes have proven beneficial in helping parents gain confidence in their ability to interact physically with their children and strengthen the family bond.
Early Childhood
An expert in early childhood dance
For more than three decades, Luna has refined pedagogy and curriculum to align with discoveries in neuroscience, play research, and cultural responsiveness. As we envision a future with today’s toddlers becoming tomorrow’s leaders, early learning demands our attention as a crucial focus.
Early Childhood services are found within all program areas (Professional Learning, Studio Lab, Partnerships, MPACT, Field Moving).
