Luna fosters leadership among dance educators and artists in a variety of ways. Our SI alumni lead Practitioner Exchange sessions at Luna and many go on to support colleagues at their workplace through mentorship, professional development, or establishing Communities of Practice. Some work in a leadership capacity at their school or organization or have founded programs.
“I was afraid to be great—to be too big. I am here [now] to honor all that I am.”
– Leadership Institute alum
Luna’s Leadership Institutes have been held onsite in a yearlong process that includes continuous individualized coaching followed by a convening of the full cohort for skill-building in strategic planning, advocacy, fundraising, budgeting, and right-sizing.
“I found my voice as an advocate for dance education and regained confidence as a professional in my teaching community.”
– Leadership Institute alum
Beyond SI alumni, we have developed projects in other regions, convening cohorts of leaders to build capacity in their communities. From a self-determination perspective, Luna uplifts the cohort to name the issues most relevant to their communities and work collaboratively to find ways to address them. Luna offers space, time, and facilitated activities on team building, professional development training, backward design, and advocacy. Following a 3-5 day intensive, participants receive individualized coaching, ongoing collegial exchange, mentorship, and field-building. Leader alumni have initiated programs in Family Dance, created pedagogy based on research into cultural dance forms, engaged in action research, and been hired as directors and advisors in schools, districts, and organizations.
Luna’s leadership team has provided support at Foolish Operations Society-Vancouver, Mills College Dance Department, San Francisco Ballet DISC program, The Wooden Floor, and beyond.
